PPF: what is it and is it worth it?

By Wrap Destination, Cruquius · 21 October 2026

In short

PPF (paint protection film) is a clear polyurethane film about 0.2 millimetres thick that protects your paint against stone chips, scratches and dirt. Light scratches in the top layer close up again with heat. It is mainly worth it if you do a lot of motorway driving, or if your car is new or expensive and you want to keep the paint in original condition.

What exactly is PPF?

PPF stands for paint protection film, in Dutch lakbeschermingsfolie. It is a clear, tough film that goes over the paint. You can hardly see it, but it takes the hits that would otherwise land on your paint.

The film is made up of layers: a top layer that can repair small scratches, a thick layer of polyurethane that absorbs the impact, and an adhesive layer. 3M Pro Series 200, for example, is 0.20 millimetres thick including adhesive. That is many times thicker than a layer of paint or a coating.

What does PPF protect against?

What does PPF not protect against?

PPF is not armour. A large stone can still cause a dent, and the manufacturer's warranty on the film does not cover dents like that. Deep scratches that go through the top layer do not heal by themselves. And PPF does not fix existing paint damage: stone chips that are already there stay visible under the film. That is why PPF is worth the most on a car whose paint is still in good condition.

Which parts can you have protected?

Common PPF packages
PackageWhat it usually coversWho it is for
Nose onlyBumper and the leading edge of the bonnetThose who mainly want to prevent stone chips on the bumper
Front endBumper, full bonnet, wings and mirror capsThose who do a lot of motorway driving
Full carAll painted panelsNew or expensive cars, or those who want to spare the paint completely

Exactly what is in a package varies by car and by workshop. Which package suits your car is something we discuss when we prepare your quote.

Individual parts are possible too: headlights, door sills, the loading edge of the boot or the area under the door handles where rings cause scratches.

How is PPF applied?

  1. The car is washed and degreased. Tar, rail dust and wash residue are removed, otherwise you would see them under the film later.
  2. The film is cut to size per panel, with a cutting plotter using a pattern for your model, or by hand with extra margin to wrap around the edges.
  3. The film goes onto the paint wet, so it can still be moved, and is then fixed in place with a squeegee.
  4. Edges are wrapped around where possible, so the edge of the film is as invisible as possible.

After application, the film needs a few days to bond fully. Small moisture spots disappear by themselves during that time.

How long does PPF last?

Realistically five to seven years, depending on the film, the climate and the care. Manufacturers' warranties are longer. 3M gives a ten-year warranty against yellowing, blistering and cracking on Pro Series 200. Those warranties cover manufacturing defects in the film, not stone chips or wear.

Wrap Destination works with 3M, Avery Dennison and Madico and gives a one-year warranty on the installation.

Is PPF worth it?

Honest answer: it depends on how you drive and how long you keep the car.

A middle ground is just the nose or the front end. That is where most stone chips land, and it costs a good deal less than the whole car.

Is PPF the same as a ceramic coating?

No. A coating is a thin, hard layer that mainly adds gloss and makes the car easier to keep clean, but it does not stop stone chips. You can read about the difference in PPF or ceramic coating. Is there matte PPF as well? Yes, it gives gloss paint a satin look. More about finishes in matte, satin or gloss.

Frequently asked questions

What is PPF?

Paint protection film: a clear polyurethane film about 0.2 millimetres thick that protects your paint against stone chips, scratches and dirt.

Can you see PPF on the car?

Hardly. Good PPF is clear and follows the paint. Up close you can sometimes see the edge of the film. There is also matte PPF, which turns gloss paint satin.

Does PPF really heal scratches by itself?

Light scratches in the top layer close up again with heat. Deep scratches that go through the top layer do not.

How long does PPF last?

Realistically five to seven years. Manufacturers give longer warranties on manufacturing defects, such as ten years on 3M Pro Series 200.

Can PPF go on a car that already has stone chips?

Yes, but existing stone chips stay visible under the film. If you do not want that, have them touched up first.
