How to wash and look after a wrapped car
In short
Ideally, wash a wrapped car by hand, with a pH-neutral shampoo without wax and two buckets. Keep a pressure washer at least 30 centimetres away and never aim straight at the edges. Avoid car washes with brushes, never polish matte film, and remove bird droppings and insects straight away.
How soon can you wash a wrapped car?
Wait at least 48 hours after the film goes on. The adhesive needs time to bond properly, especially at the edges. After that, Avery Dennison recommends washing the film at least once a month. More often is fine, and in winter, with road salt about, it is no unnecessary luxury.
How do you wash a wrapped car by hand?
- Rinse. Rinse off loose dirt and sand with lukewarm water. With a pressure washer, stay at least 30 centimetres away and never aim straight at the edges of the film.
- Pre-wash. Let foam or a mild pre-wash soak in for a moment, so dirt comes loose without scrubbing.
- Two-bucket wash. Wash with a soft wash mitt and a pH-neutral shampoo without wax. Use one bucket of soapy water and one bucket of clean water to rinse the mitt.
- Rinse again. Rinse the shampoo off thoroughly, including from seams and around the edges.
- Dry. Pat dry with a clean microfibre cloth or blow the water off. Do not rub hard.
A wrap is softer than car paint. Sand in a wash mitt causes fine scratches more easily. Hence that second bucket.
Can a wrapped car go through a car wash?
Preferably not one with brushes. The brushes rub over the edges and can lift them over time, and they leave fine scratches on gloss film. 3M names a brushless car wash or a hand wash with a mild shampoo without wax as the best choice. If you do use a car wash, pick a programme without wax and without hot drying.
How close can the pressure washer get?
| Point | Advice |
|---|---|
| Distance | At least 30 centimetres. Start further away and move closer slowly. |
| Edges | Never aim straight at an edge or seam. Spray along it, not underneath it. |
| Pressure | No more than about 80 bar. |
| Nozzle | A wide fan, not a pinpoint jet or rotating nozzle. |
| Temperature | No hotter than 60 degrees. |
These values come from Polestar's care advice for cars with film. They are a good guideline for any wrapped car.
Can you polish or wax a wrap?
Gloss film can be polished lightly by hand with a product made for film. Stay away from the edges. Matte and satin film should never be polished, because you end up with shiny patches. Ordinary car wax does not belong on film. There are sealants made specifically for wrap film, including for matte. They make the surface smooth, so dirt comes off more easily. More about finishes in matte, satin or gloss.
What do you do about bird droppings, insects and tar?
- Bird droppings, insects and tree sap should come off as soon as possible. Let lukewarm water or a film-safe cleaner soak in for a moment, then wipe it off gently.
- Tar is removed with a tar remover on a cloth, not sprayed directly onto the film. Some tar removers attack the adhesive if they run under the edges.
- Fuel that gets on the film while filling up should be wiped off immediately.
- Do not use strong solvents such as isopropyl alcohol directly on the film. Avery Dennison warns that this can cause loss of gloss and make the film age faster.
Does this also apply to PPF?
Largely, yes. You wash PPF the same way: by hand, with the pressure washer at a distance and without abrasive products. The self-healing top layer likes heat: light wash marks often disappear by themselves in the sun or with warm water. If you want PPF to be extra easy to keep clean, a coating made for film can go on top. See PPF or ceramic coating.
What do you do in winter?
Road salt and road dirt tend to cling to the lower part of the car and around the edges. So wash more often in winter, even when it is cold. Pay particular attention to rinsing the lower parts. Do not scrape ice off wrapped panels, only off the windows, and do not use hot water to defrost ice. An ice scraper on film leaves scratches you cannot get out, especially on matte.
When should you call us?
If you see an edge lifting, a small tear or a bubble that does not go away, do not wait. A lifting edge traps dirt and water and quickly gets bigger. A small repair often solves it. You get a one-year warranty on the installation by Wrap Destination. Send a photo via WhatsApp and we will take a look.
Good care is also the best way to make your wrap last. Read more about that in how long does a wrap last.
Frequently asked questions
Can a wrapped car go through a car wash?
Preferably not a car wash with brushes. A brushless car wash without wax is fine, but washing by hand is best.
How close can I get with a pressure washer?
At least 30 centimetres, with a wide spray, no more than about 80 bar and never aimed straight at the edges.
Can I wax my wrap?
Not with ordinary car wax. Use a sealant made for wrap film. On matte film, only use products made for matte.
How long should I wait before washing after wrapping?
At least 48 hours, so the adhesive can bond properly.
Can I use an ice scraper on a wrapped car?
Only on the windows. On film, an ice scraper leaves scratches you cannot get out.
What should I do if an edge starts lifting?
Get in touch and send a photo. A lifting edge quickly gets bigger, and a small repair often solves it.
